Totnes & Dartington Ladies FC History

Originally known as Totnes Town Ladies the Senior team was founded in 2000. Managed by Paul Topping, Totnes went on to win Division One of the Westward Developments Devon Women's League in Their first season. That opening season saw Totnes maintain the best defensive record in the league. Totnes were then promoted into the Premier Division for the 2001-2 season and have maintained their position in that Division ever since.

The team has seen a number of managers come and go over the years, Phil Collings, Martin Squires, Mark Nicholls, and Nigel Sims.

2006 saw a couple of major changes. Having seen five Male Managers come and go in as many seasons, former Newton Abbot Ladies manager Toni Crook took on the role with Player Manager Karen Smith alongside her. Toni and Karen brought with them a number of the Newton Abbot players and the assistance of Jan Sprague. The club merged with Dartington FC and became Totnes and Dartington Ladies.

With the added experience of the new management team and players who had previously been playing in the South West Combination League, The 2006/7 season saw Tot's have their best season ever, reaching the semi-finals of the Devon County Cup, the final of the League Cup and finishing third in the Premier League.

Footballing History Part 2

A couple of weeks ago Jan asked me to put down on paper a little about my footballing history.!! Yes we did have pens way back when I started kicking a ball around.
Well where do I start? Well it goes as far Back as March 1975, I was invited to play in a 5 aside match for a girls team in Plymouth at a boys tournament. We were to play in between the semi finals and the boys final. I played for Plymouth against Barnstaple and we won. As this was national completion we were invited to play a one off game at Wembley arena. Not even knowing that girls were allowed to play football I couldn’t believe it.!! I don’t remember who we played against but I do remember scoring 2 goals in front of a crowd of 10,000 people and we won.

My Account of Smithy’s History

Firstly I am writing this because I think it is good for people to know where colleagues come from and Smithy is too lazy to do it.

Smithy started playing in the newly formed Torquay United in 1990 along with Jussy; I was the Manager and also playing.
I can honestly say I have never seen her give less than a 100% in any game and was always one of the first names on the team sheet, although not one of the easiest players to control or coach, simply because she always had something to say to team mates and didn’t pay attention.
She was in the Southwest league under 21 squad and represented Devon at senior level.
